Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender equality and the rights of women from a young age. The ebullient young woman was targeted online for launching a website that focused on the gender of videogames. It was not enough to stop her. In fact, it made her more committed as a feminist and media critique. Numerous awards have been awarded to her as a way of acknowledging all the contributions that she have made. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
